Gone are the days when female jockeys play second fiddle to men. Unbelievably until relatively recent history there were still restrictions on women jockeys within the sport of racing, which stifled their progress. It wasn’t until 1972 that women were allowed to race. Since then we have gradually seen the number of top class female jockeys turn from a drip to a flood and some of the greatest prizes and titles in racing (think Rachael Blackmore on Minella Times in the Grand National and A Plus Tard in the Cheltenham Gold Cup) come their way. The growing list below relfects women jockeys who paved the way for others as well as those clearly eager to pick up the mantle and take the horse racing world by storm.
