Simply put the title of Champion jockey goes to whoever has the most wins over the racing season (rather than calendar year – 4th May – 19th October, 2024 is the flat period). There are separate titles for both flat racing and national hunt. In addition, there’s a (flat) champion apprentice jockey title for those between the ages of 16 – 25 (with a prize of £5000 for the winner) and a Champion Conditional Jockeys award for national hunt apprentices. Legends are made by those who claimed the title year on year, and many household name flat racing jockeys have won the Flat Jockey Championship over the years. Think Lester Piggott, Kieren Fallon and Ryan Moore. Last year’s winner was William Buick.
